Second Annual Conference
Futurizing Jewish Education: NEW PARADIGM SHIFTS
This conference is sponsored by :
The Ministry of Education and Culture - the National Jewish Studies Center for Teachers In-Service Training, Bet -Yatziv, Beer Sheva, Israel.
The Center For Futurism In Education, Department of Education, Ben Gurion University of the Negev.
The Israel Futures Association
The World Future Society, Israel Chapter
The World Network of Religious Futurists
Purpose:
The purpose of this conference is to invite "Anticipatory Thinking" in the field of Jewish Education in Israel and the Jewish global communities as we enter the new millennium. Relating to a 5-10 year future time frame is basically extrapolating what is going on now. Dealing with a 20-30 year time frame is mostly speculation. Therefor we are dealing a 10-20 year mid-range future, where we can relate to what is likely to happen and develop some specific strategies to deal with these trends.
As the proto-futurist Rabbi Shimon of the Mishna asked 2000 years ago "Who is wise: One who sees that which is to be born-(HaRoeh Et HaNolad)" (Avot:2:9).
Process:
The process that seems appropriate is to focus on raising significant questions so that we might discuss the Possible/Probable/Preferable scenarios that might arise and have a reasonable idea of how to relate to them.
The questions that are significant to me:
How will the vast increase in the integrated and constantly expanding Information Technologies effect teaching/learning of Jewish subjects?
There is a much faster increase in the computing power of the next generations children at home than at school. How and where will these students learn?
How might Judaic learning systems look like if we begin to use "Multiple Intelligences" as a model of learning?
Most Judaica is still being taught in the classical linear models, how might the multi-linear information systems impact on this?
How might we apply "Right brain and Left Brain" learning strategies to dealing with Judaica? What of "Virtual Reality" Judaica leaning
Now, teachers are having a great deal of difficulty dealing with the many changes brought about by the shift from being " The Sage-On-The-Stage" to "The- Guide-By-The-Side". How might this change with the much more personalized information access systems in schools , homes and other sites?
In the Cyberworld, the differences between the learner in Israel and in the Global Jewish Community are likely to be minimized dramatically. How can we relate to this emerging commonality of community?
Assuming that "learners-learn-where-learners-are". Can we develop Home Based schooling, or other than home or school learning sites for Jewish subjects?
Are the Information Technologies going to be interesting ornaments to the conventional classroom or a driving force for educational reform?
WHAT ARE YOUR QUESTIONS ????
Links:
We are linking our conference with the JWW99- Jewish Web Week (Feb.21-26,1999) and asking for questions ,comments, observations on the theme of Futurizing Jewish Education from a wide range of interested parties from all over the Jewish world. We will archive them and relate to this input during the conference and perhaps after as well.
Wishing us all an interesting and productive conference !
Shalom
