Welcome to THE FOUNDATION LEVEL READING ANG SOCIAL INTERACTION PROGRAM PAGE.
Rational
The program focuses on junior-high students with special needs (foundation level)
and is based on the New Curriculum of the Ministry of Education of Israel.
Why foundation level? Our staff is sure that the earlier we start helping our
students close the gaps, the better results they can achieve in senior grades. We believe that as soon as our weaker students get the basic skills and master foundation level benchmarks, their chances of getter better Bagrut in English will greatly increase.
Foundation level students face a variety of problems: lack of vocabulary, inability to
produce even a simple sentence. Most of them feel unable to talk at all due to the total lack of self confidence. In addition, most of them are embarrassed to read aloud, and even if they do read, they either mispronounce most of the words or do not understand what they read. Hence, the feeling of frustration, low self esteem, lack of motivation and discipline problems. The misconception that English as a subject is something you do not have to study for ("either you have got it or not") explains why foundation level students do not even try to put any effort into studying English
The aim of our success-oriented program is to show foundation level students that if they do study, they will succeed.
The program is divided into two parts: reading comprehension and social interaction.
Reading comprehension:
There are 20 basic level topic centered texts in the reading comprehension
part. All of them are written in a very simple language.
How to teach? For each text separately a teacher should follow the steps below.
The first step is introduction and reinforcement of basic vocabulary related to the topic
of the text to be taught. After the teacher makes sure that the students have mastered the vocabulary
needed, the text should be given to the class. The students should be asked to identify the words in the
text and try to understand the passage. A teacher has to meet two aims: technical reading and comprehension.
Social Interaction:
There are 20 basic questions a student has to be able to understand and respond to in at least 5 basic sentences.
How to teach? A teacher should work on each question separately using the substitution tables prepared for
each question. A teacher has to make sure that by the end of each topic students are able to understand the question and react accordingly.
Important: There is correlation between topics in reading comprehension and social interaction sections.
We believe that social interaction and reading comprehension should be integrated according to the mutual topics presented in the program.
