Rachel Nadelman from
the
JCC in Manhattan
 visits Israel

For its Books for Israel Book Drive, the Jewish Community
Center in Manhattan, New York adopted three flagship communities -- in the Jewish, Druze, and Muslim sectors.  Rachel Nadelman, in charge of The JCC in Manhattan's
special projects sought to demonstrate how the group's
outlooks reflect respect for Israel and its pluralistic
demography.

When in October 2003, Rachel had an opportunity to visit
Israel, she quickly notified her contacts in the Books for
Israel Project. Although her stay was a relatively short
one, it was packed with activity.

In these photos, Rachel visits the Yarka A elementary
school which serves the Druze community. To the
left: Rachel meets Nihaya Salin, English teacher and
flagship coordinator for the Northern Druze sector of
schools. Children from the fourth, fifth and sixth grade
rushed over to meet Rachel and to hear some words
spoken in native English.

In the second picture, Rachel (left) and Nihaya (right)
meet in the office of Yarka A's school principal,
Kamil Abu-dola.

Below left, Rachel and Nihaya mingle with the children
during the school break.

Below right, a student from the sixth grade class reads
aloud in English, expressing thanks on behalf of the
school and the students.  Books from Rachel's drive
will add to the growing collection that will help build
Yarka A's first English room and library.
