(Note: I tried to find articles that were intrinsically interesting,
that people would read, hence the somewhat sensationalist nature of some.
This is the stuff of the movies people want to watch. If it
don’t grab the interest, who wants to read it?? The students however,
do seem to appreciate the real meat for discussion.)



Technical note.


The questions for the texts are word files, to be downloaded and used, by the students,
on screen in Word.

The texts themselves are to be downloaded , opened in Word,
printed out on the printer once, and then photocopied. This is the fastest method,
and also allows enlarging if so desired.

Some of the texts are regular typed Word files, these are texts I generally
downloaded from the Internet. Some of the texts are scanned in photographs
of the text, and you will probably want to enlarge these a little when photocopying
for the students..

The files you download often open automatically in Word on your screen.
If it is the first time you try to do this the computer may ask you to pick
the application or program you want to open the file in.

Naturally you will browse till you find Winword, and tell the computer
to use winword.exe . From then on it will not ask you again, it will know each
time you download one of the files from me that it needs to open it in Word.

Once you see the file open on your screen, having downloaded it from the Internet
into Word, you then need to save the file to your hard disk for future use.
As you probably know, you do this with the File menu in the top left hand corner
of the screen, (or right corner if it is Word with Hebrew menus), choosing the File ,
Save As option in the normal way.

Driving.

Looking at a small Internet Newspaper from an obscure country town in America
finds that a big worry for them is - road accidents. Heartfelt and clear safe-driving
article written to American teenagers. My students found it clear and good.

Nando1

The Nando Times is an Internet Newspaper that has a page of curious bits of news
collectedfrom around the world - aliens, money falling from the sky, interesting
computer crimes, Lenin’s embalmed body. It also has a page of entertainment news
- X-files, Simpsons . 2 pages of selected excerpts.

Nando 2

Has the questions for the second page of Nando 1.

Evita

The short biography of the real Evita provided on the Internet. Ties in neatly with the
film of course. Good meat for discussion in a number of areas.

Lenin

A mature and intelligent Newsweek article about Lenin as the father of modern mass
murder horrors. Looks difficult, but students see that despite not understanding every
word, they can extract the main ideas.
Give the difficult vocabulary as an exercise in finding meanings in dictionary first.

Topclass

Survey finds Asian students are best in world at math and science, despite less
homework and rote work. What is best way to learn ??

Killer Lovers

- True story of jealousy and murder among teenagers. Arouses interest and discussion.

Children of the Night

Jerusalem Post account of runaway teenagers and their life on the streets of
Tel Aviv. Though provoking, real.

Tattoos

Teenage tattoo artist in Tel-Aviv tattoo parlor, right on !!

Drugs

Page from Newsweek account of drugs and the pop scene after Kurt
Cobain’s death. Good, relevant, cool anti-drug stuff.

Who's a Coercer?

Good, clear, thought-provoking article about closing mall on
Shabbat controversy in Ramat Aviv. Discussion of religous freedom etc.

Sinkies

Did you know there is now an organisation for people who eat their food hurriedly
standing over the kitchen sink? Well there is, and it is dedicated to removing the
stigma from what we should today realise is a perfectly normal practice, and nothing
to be ashamed of ! With summary cloze also, to be given after all is answered.

Fox Shows for Next Year

The Fox Network is apparently preparing some really crazy shows for next year,
and this article talks about them. The students found this was just what they were
interested in, and complimented me on bringing such an important matter to their
attention. With summary cloze also.
